Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is considered the most important representative of the Pop Art movement. A critical and creative observer of American society, he explored key themes such as consumerism, materialism, the media and celebrities. Drawing on contemporary adverts, serial images, consumer products and Hollywood's most famous faces, Warhol proposed a radical re-evaluation of what constituted artistic subject matter. For Warhol, a can of Campbell's soup and a bottle of Coca-Cola become as worthy of artistic status as any traditional still life.
At the same time, Warhol reconfigured the role of the artist. Famously stating "I want to be a machine", he systematically reduced the presence of his own authorship, working with mass production methods and images, as well as dozens of assistants in a studio he called The Factory.
This book presents the multifaceted and prolific work of Warhol, who revolutionised the distinctions between erudite and popular art and integrated ideas about living, producing and consuming, which remain central issues of the modern experience.
